Funko Pops: What’s the Hype?

Funko Pops first appeared on toy shelves in 2010, a good couple of years after their creator, Mike Becker started his company and aimed to create unique collectibles for movie, cartoon, video game, and pop culture fans.

What started as a novel and fun idea to give people a chance to own a little replica of their favorite character soon turned into a massive craze, with people of all ages rushing out to snag a 5-inch vinyl figurine of their favorite character. Now worth a staggering $379 million, Funko owner and creator Mike Becker is smiling to the bank.

But, just what is it that makes them so valuable today? The answer is an easy one: collectors are ready and willing to shell out thousands of dollars to own a unique and rare collector’s item.

And, if bidding sites like eBay are to be believed, the Funko Pop market is still very much thriving.

The Most Expensive Funko Pop Ever Created

So, we know that Funko Pops are valuable, but just how much would someone be willing to pay to own a collectible of their favorite character? The answer will astound you! $60,000 – this is the amount that one collector paid for a vinyl replica of Alex DeLarge, the lead character in Stanley Kurbick’s cult classic film A Clockwork Orange.

Sold in November 2022 for the insane amount of $60,000, the Clockwork Orange Funko Pop is one of 24 that were released, with 12 of these becoming what is called a “chase” piece after a legal battle in 2012. This makes it the single most expensive Funko Pop ever sold.

Oh, and did we mention that it glows in the dark?

This bloody Funko Pop was released in 2013, with 12 common and 12 glow-in-the-dark figurines available.

6. Count Chocula Freddy Funko – $10,000

The popular Star Wars bounty hunter’s look-a-like was released back in 2014 at the San Diego Comic-Con, and quickly became a sought-after item that is worth anywhere between $9,100 and $13,320, according to PopPriceGuide. Well, you could, but you would need to be prepared to pay a whopping $ 18,000 for that honor.

Fun fact: The Stan Lee Funko Pop is the only collectible based on a real person that makes it onto our list of the 10 most valuable Funko Pops ever created. We’re guessing his popularity has something to do with it, as he brought us some of our best-loved comic superheroes and villains.

Will Funko Pops Make Money Long Term?

There is no easy answer to this question if you consider current pop culture, is there? While we think there is, there are those who will disagree and feel that the Funko Pop craze will one day come to an end. Pop culture is a tricky maze to navigate, and with newer and more exciting things being released almost daily, there is no telling just how long this craze will last and if there is money in Funko Pops.

For collectors, however, there is no telling just how much they are willing to spend on a 5-inch figurine of a popular character. And with people still shelling out their hard-earned cash to own one of these rare collector’s items, it is hard to say what the future holds for Funko Pops. If current market prices are to be believed, the Funko Pop craze is far from over, and these little figurines are still worth a pretty penny.

Some pop trends will age, like fine wine, increasing in value over time. But others will simply fade out, and everyone will forget that they ever existed. Remember Beanie Babies? If you do, you are probably considered middle-aged now. It remains to be seen just what will become of Funko Pops.

The question is, are you willing to pay the price and become a collector?
