1985 was a great year. Not only did the GOAT Michael Jordan win Rookie of the Year, but the sneakers that were about to launch footwear fashion into the air were released.

Designed by Peter Moore, the Air Jordan 1 became the first multi-colored shoe to be worn in the NBA. It was such a radical concept that even MJ had to think twice about it. He eventually gave the OK on the design.

NBA Commissioner David Stern couldn’t stand the sight of those shoes moving around the courts, so he banned the AJ 1s. Whenever MJ wore the shoes in court, he had to pay hefty fines. Ouch!

Nike had different ideas. The shoe titan managed to spin the situation in its favor, agreeing to pay MJ’s fines for him. They went on to christen their controversial sneakers with the label “The shoe banned by the NBA.”

The rest is history. The Air Jordan 1s have since dominated the sneaker space, introducing an array of colorways so that there is something for everyone, regardless of their unique tastes.

Why are Air Jordan 1 Low Colorways so popular?

  1. Heritage and Legacy: The Air Jordan 1 is a classic sneaker with immense cultural and historical significance in streetwear and basketball fashion. The low-top version provides a more versatile and casual option while still carrying the iconic design.
  2. Versatility: The Air Jordan 1’s low-top silhouette makes it more versatile and easier to style with a variety of outfits. It can be paired with jeans, shorts, or even dresses, appealing to a broader audience beyond just basketball enthusiasts.
  3. Comfort: While the Air Jordan 1 Low maintains the aesthetic appeal of the original high-top version, some people find low-top sneakers more comfortable for everyday wear. The lower cut can provide better ankle mobility and a lighter feel.
  4. Fashion Trends: The resurgence of ’90s fashion and the ongoing popularity of retro styles have contributed to the demand for classic sneakers like the Air Jordan 1 Low. The sneaker’s timeless design makes it a fashionable choice that transcends trends.
  5. Collaborations and Limited Releases: Collaborations with artists, designers, and other brands, as well as limited edition releases, often generate significant buzz and increase the desirability of specific colorways. Sneaker enthusiasts are drawn to the exclusivity and uniqueness of these collaborations.
  6. Collector’s Appeal: Sneaker collecting has become a significant subculture, and collectors often seek after Air Jordan 1 Lows. Limited releases, unique colorways, and collaborations can turn certain pairs into coveted items.
  7. Brand Endorsement: Michael Jordan’s legacy and association with the Nike brand contribute to the enduring appeal of Air Jordan sneakers. The iconic Jumpman logo and the history behind the Air Jordan line add to the shoes’ cultural cachet.
