Chamberlain was born August 21, 1936, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and grew up there. He attended Overbrook High School and had an impressive basketball career. At 7 ft 1 in (2.16 m) tall and 275 lbs (125 kg) at the time of his retirement in 1973, he was one of the tallest and heaviest players ever to play in the NBA.

He was well known for his intimidating physical stature and large hands, with which he could grab a rebound and initiate a fast break. He was also noted for his unique style of play, which combined size, strength, agility, and speed, enabling him to dominate the court in a way that had never been seen before.
